And just like that, they’re doing another 10 episodes of Sex and the City. And I have to wonder: Whatever for?!
Okay, don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan of the show. It was hilarious the way Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte got themselves into all sorts of misadventures, encountering all sorts of characters along the way. The writing was spunky and the outfits divine. And you have to admit that some of the characters, or at least their neurosis, are quite familiar. You can even say they’re based on real life! Mwahahaha
SATC was actually one of the shows I re-watched during the hard lockdown. I felt nostalgic for our “old world,” and SATC satisfied my sentimental longing. Sigh, what I would give to go out to brunch or dinner with my girlfriends without the fear of getting sick or wearing a face mask and face shield or practicing social distancing. How delightful is this world where we only worried about being on the list for the “happening” event or the “it” bag. How nice would it be to discuss the gender politics of the “backdoor” instead of the efficacy of the Sinovac vaccine.
And there, right there is the problem. SATC was iconic because it spoke of the culture and values of a specific moment in time, now long gone. The first SATC movie was still able to evoke that moment. But by the time the second movie came around, the franchise had run out of steam. The women were nearing their fifties, with Samantha already 52, but they still had all these unresolved men issues. Ugh.
I do understand this urge to recreate the series once again. It’s familiar. It’s comfortable. It’s safe. I just have to wonder though, wouldn’t it be absolutely more fabulous to do something new? What do you think?
